But first, what is solid wood flooring?

Solid hardwood flooring is carpentered wood cut and made into panelled flooring. It can be made from various types of wood such as beech, oak, maple and many others. Even bamboo, which is technically a grass, though it’s actually stronger than most solid woods.

So what are the benefits of solid wood flooring?

The benefits are mostly aesthetic (let's face it, it's pretty) although there are some monetary values to laying down a decent solid wood floor.

The deep and diverse coloring

You will not achieve the depth of color that a solid wood floor has with laminate flooring. Solid wood floors fade, dip and swirl in the most gorgeous ways and to go to the lengths of recreating that natural beauty would be more expensive than purchasing a real solid wood floor. The tone of a gorgeous maple floor will instantly make a room feel tasteful and important. Look at these dark oak floors they just ooze warmth and style - http://www.thesolidwoodflooringcompany.com/darker-oak-floors-c-10.html.

Solid wood ages beautifully

Like a fine wine or a smooth leather jacket, solid wood floor ages beautifully. You won’t get as many chips and scratches as you would with laminate, and the buffs and the kinks that you get over time in a solid wood floor will look distinguished. It seems unfair to our little friend, laminate, but it’s true. A scratch on a solid wood floor looks so much cooler than one on a laminate. It's almost like the older it gets, the better it gets.
Stains (or the lack there of...)

Unlike carpets, red wine will not stain your beautiful wood the millisecond a drop hits it. Just get a kitchen towel, wipe it up and your worries will be cleaned away.

The Sound is Comforting

Unlike the cold slap you get off a tile a solid wood floor makes hardly any noise. You’ll hear the occasional creak of a floorboard but when you pass around your homestead the sound will be solid and level.

Your pet will thank you

Dog’s have terrible trouble with laminate flooring especially young and geriatric pooches. A solid wood floor will give them grip. Just be wary of their claws on your floor, keep them trim and they’ll be less likely to scratch the floor. This video of poor Max trying to go down stairs almost makes me cry...

Increase the value of your home

One of the most important benefits of a solid wood floor. If your solid wood floor fits your house, is well made and well fitted, then the value of your home could increase. You will not manage this with laminate flooring.

Engineered Wood Flooring

I have engineered wood flooring in my basement, and so does my friend Tami, and it looks amazing. If you have looked at hardwood but can’t face paying the prices, which is understandable, they can be hefty, you should look into engineered wood flooring. Engineered wood has many of solid woods benefits a similar look and feel, but also some of its own features. It doesn’t need maintenance like a hard wood floor and it fits as cheaply and easily as a laminate.
